The Leather Sea is about someone very close to me who attempted suicide many years ago. I found her on the floor of her flat in a very bad way and rushed her to hospital in the back of my car. I went back to her flat to get some stuff together for her and found her suicide note beside her bed. I knew she’d been suffering with depression, but I had no idea how badly until I read it. She talked of feeling as though she was drowning in the sea, but every time she tried to get her head above water, she couldn’t, because the waves were made of leather.
She’s the most genuine, lovely person you could ever wish to meet, wouldn’t harm a fly, so the chorus lyrics are basically an all out attack on God because I was convinced she was gonna be taken away. Thankfully, that didn’t happen and she is now very happy.
The Leather Sea
Lyrics
The Leather Sea
She swims across the leather sea
Her skin reflects so beautifully
She looks to me, and turns away
So this is the last real day
Your God is guilty Your God is nothing
You’ll see things he’ll never see
Your God was nowhere
A false confession
And never there to comfort me
Your God is nowhere, Your God is nothing
You’ll seen things he’ll never see
Your God is only a fallen idol
A ghost of sick humanity
There is a hate that burns within
Desolate places that I’ve been
Come back to me, I need to say
I’d breathe for you for just one day
Your God is guilty Your God is nothing
You’ll see things he’ll never see
Your God was nowhere
A false confession
And never there to comfort me
Your God is nowhere, Your God is nothing
You’ll seen things he’ll never see
Your God is only a fallen idol
A ghost of sick humanity
