Gary Numan is considered the 'Godfather' of electronic music and since 1978 has released studio albums, collaborations and live sets that have influenced the likes of musicians such as Dave Grohl, and Trent Reznor.

HIs legions of Numanoids (like me) have followed his music now for almost 50 years ! 😎👍

But, you say "The guy has 22 studio studio albums, over a dozen live albums and there are TONS of compilations! Where do I start? What do I do? How do I choose??"

Telekon - 45th Anniversary Pre Order

24/10/25

45th Anniversary Expanded Edition With 4 Unreleased Bonus Tracks Including Never Before Heard Song “Like A B-Film”

Gary Numan’s second studio album TELEKON was released in 1980 and was his third successive #1 album in the UK. Gary refers to this album, along with its two predecessors, Tubeway Army’s Replicas and his debut solo album The Pleasure Principle, as the “machine” phase of his career. While it was hard to follow up the previous releases, Telekon proved to be hugely influential. Unlike its predecessors, Telekon had plenty of guitars, along with strings and lush synthesizer textures. Trent Reznor claimed to have listened to it every day during the making of Pretty Hate Machine.

Earlier this year, a visit to Gary’s archive allowed for a deep dig, and amongst all the treasures, unreleased Telekon material was found. We are thrilled to include four unreleased tracks on this expanded edition of Telekon. “Like A B-Film” is a completely unreleased, not quite finished track from the album’s sessions. The other three tracks are previously unreleased early versions of “Please Push No More”, “Aircrash Bureau” and “I’m An Agent”. Pressed onto double rainbow sparkle black vinyl, the album has been remastered by Geoff Pesche at Abbey Road and includes revised artwork by Michael Speed at Beggars, who has frequently collaborated with Gary on his Beggars reissues. It also includes a replica of the original 1980 12-page Telekon tour booklet.

“Telekon has always held a rather warm place for me whenever I look back at the early years. I was very proud of it. I thought the production had moved up a gear for one thing. I was also proud of the fact that I’d not gone the commercial route and tried to repeat the formula and sound of “Cars” and “Are ‘Friends’ Electric?” I was still trying to move forward, find new sounds. It was a reasonably bold stance I think, to not follow a safer, more formulaic path, as I suddenly had a lot to lose after the success of the year before.” – Gary Numan

Five Decades of Numan The Alien Within Book

Five Decades of Numan: The Alien Within Paperback – 3 Aug. 2025

by Medusa Vidic (Author)

In the neon-lit haze of 1979 London, a young Gary Numan, born Gary Webb, emerged from the punk underground with a futuristic vision that would change music forever. Armed with a Minimoog and a cold, robotic persona, he crafted hits like “Are ‘Friends’ Electric?” and “Cars,” blending synth-pop’s icy pulses with raw emotion. His dystopian lyrics, inspired by sci-fi giants like Philip K. Dick, spoke of alienation and technology, resonating with a generation on the cusp of the digital age. From chart-topping glory to the struggles of the 1980s, Numan’s resilience shone through, his later industrial works like Splinter and Intruder earning critical acclaim. A licensed pilot, autism advocate, and devoted family man, Numan’s story is one of reinvention and enduring influence, inspiring artists from Nine Inch Nails to Lady Gaga.

Electronic Sound Issue 130 Gary Numan transparent red vinyl seven-inch single

Gary Numan + ‘I’m An Agent‘ / ‘Remind Me To Smile‘ transparent red vinyl seven-inch single

Red alert!! Ahead of a UK tour to mark the 45th anniversary of his seminal 'Telekon' album, Electronic Sound are delighted to have GARY NUMAN on the cover of this month's Electronic Sound. Electronic Sound are bundling the issue with an awesome red vinyl seven-inch too, which is an exclusive release featuring two tracks from 'Telekon' selected for us by the great man himself.

Gary Numan's 'Telekon' album was a stark and futuristic landmark of electronic music, but it was also the sound of a young man struggling to come to terms with his sudden and often overwhelming fame. At one point in 1980, with three records sitting in the UK Top 20, everybody wanted a piece of him. 'Telekon' is one of the main topics of our lengthy and detailed conversation with Numan, in which he talks candidly about death threats, stalkers, plane crashes, ghosts and much more, explaining what it was really like to live with the machines while the world lost its head all around him. It's a hugely entertaining read, both for ardent Numanoids and curious onlookers alike.

As ever, Electronic Sound have a strong supporting cast for our cover story. Our other interviews include CARLOS ALOMAR and GEORGE MURRAY, two notable members of David Bowie's band, British dub pioneer ADRIAN SHERWOOD, and industrial provocateurs FINITRIBE. Plus art rock legend BILL NELSON, oddball duo SCISSORGUN, synthppop maverick JOHN MAUS, freewheeling producer SUDAN ARCHIVES, and genre-spanning composer EMMA-JEAN THACKRAY. The past, present and future of electronica awaits you!

Alongside this month's magazine Electronic Sound also have an exclusive and limited edition GARY NUMAN seven-inch on red vinyl. The record features two of the highlights of 'Telekon' – 'I'm An Agent' and 'Remind Me To Smile' – with both of the tracks having been personally chosen for this release by Numan.

"I've always loved how 'I'm An Agent' came to me in a dream," he says, adding that it's his favourite track on 'Telekon'. "I woke up with it in my head, so I rang my mum and dad's house and sang it onto their answerphone. I love the way it starts with that rumble as well. It screams in, right from the beginning. I was pleased with it at the time and I've stayed pleased with it ever since."

"With 'Remind Me To Smile', that's about my disillusionment with being famous," continues Numan. "It was based on the fact that I was often told to smile, but my whole look was based on how I didn't like smiling. I'd think to myself, 'I don't want to and I'm not particularly happy anyway'. I still don't like smiling. I'm terrible at it."
