CRYPT OF DAWN 4 - CONFORM TO THE NORM

GARY NUMAN’S DOMINION DAY (Taken from Crypt Of Dawn 4 - Conform To The Norm)

As independent artists go, Gory Human is the original musical outsider of his generation. Having traded corporate subsidy for personal vision almost two decades ago, Human has blazed a troll of musicol innovations and popular showmanship that has a greater influence today than ever before. His music and stoge persona: dark, alienated, perverse and personal, paved -the way for the so-called New Romantic movement (which he scorned) in the ‘8Os, and is now being recognized asa malor force in the gothictindusirial and tech-no movements of the ‘90s. Yet, the inbetween years have been difficult, to say the least. For the complete story Irec¬ommend tracking down a copy of PRAYING TO THE ALIENS The Autobiography of Gary Human from Andre Oeuisch Publishers. It’s an amazing story, and it’s not over yet.

What set Human apart from the host of other synthesists of his generation, is that he become an overnight superstar, the first ever in the held of electronica, with a roll of Top 10 hits in the UK and the worldwide smash ‘Cars” released in 1979. But that’s ancient history. Today is what ounts. Erroneously labeled a one-hit wonder here in the USA, Human has released over 20 albums and maintains a devoted fan following around the world. Today, in 1998, Human is experiencing a sort of revival among critics and fans that has seen a revision of his place in musical history and, more importantly, a hugely successful tour of the USA. His first in 18 years. And I was there to see it first hand.

I hove personally been a fan of Human for the last 20 years and hove long predicted that Gary’s body of work is just too enormous to be ignored by the music press forever. And anyone who came out to see the many sold-out shows across North America can tell you lust what an event a Human concert really is. Never in my wildest dreams did I think that I could be there to witness this turn-of-fortune up close and personal, but I did, and it was awesome.

So, thank you Tony and Beryl and Gemma and everyone in the band for making the North American EXILE Tour such an amazing experience for myself and Brenda. And thank you, Gary, for making the music.

Robb Horan:
P.S. If you don’t have a copy of Gary’s latest album, EXILE, from Cleopatra Records, go and get it.
